Protective Actions

Understanding Protective Actions

In the event that you have to Shelter-In-Place, Evacuate or take Health-related actions.

We are in the Middle of an Emergency – What Should I Do?

A tropical storm is approaching New Jersey. An industrial accident has released a hazardous chemical. A suspected terrorist act has disrupted traffic in your community. When emergencies like these occur, the first question most people ask is: “What should I do?” The answer will come from your local, county, or state emergency management officials, who will direct you to take action.

These Actions may Include
  • Sheltering-In-Place – stay indoors, at home, school, or work – and take steps to protect yourself from the outside environment
  • Evacuation – leaving the affected area and follow designated evacuation routes to a safe shelter or location.
  • Health-Related Actions – such as reporting to a designated site for medication or treatment and taking preventative medicine.

Stay Informed: Use a battery-powered radio, local TV, or official alert systems to get updated instructions throughout the emergency. Follow directions immediately to help protect your safety and the safety of those around you.

Stay tuned to your local radio or TV stations for official instructions. A battery-powered radio with extra batteries is a critical part of your Emergency Supply Kit.

During an emergency, local, county, or state emergency management officials will notify the public using:

  • Emergency Alert System (EAS) broadcasts on radio and TV
  • Community notification systems (such as Reverse 911), which deliver messages to landline phones
  • Public announcements made by officials using loudspeakers or bullhorns

What You’ll Hear

Emergency officials will clearly explain which protective actions you should take. For example:

  • You may be told to Shelter-in-Place by staying inside, closing windows and doors, and turning off ventilation systems.
  • You may be instructed to Evacuate if your area is at immediate risk.

Take all emergency messages seriously and act immediately. Your safety depends on it.
