What is the New Jersey All Hazard Incident Management Team (NJ-AHIMT)?

The NJ-AHIMT is a Type 3 Incident Management Team. An IMT is a team of highly trained, experienced and credentialed people that can come together and deploy with appropriate equipment and personnel to manage a crisis situation that exceeds the day to day resources of the affected jurisdiction. The team functions under the National Incident Management System (NIMS) to support the incident management needs of local communities and agencies when requested during major emergency events. There are different types of IMT’s based on qualifications and experience: Generally speaking, Type 1 is a National Team, Type 2 is a State Team, Type 3 is a Regional Team, and Type 4 is a Local (i.e. city or county) team.

The team primarily serves all 21 counties of New Jersey including all 565 municipalities. The team can also be requested by other states throughout the country.

The NJ-AHIMT is a Type 3 team who are deployed as a team of 8-12 trained personnel, representing multiple disciplines who manage major and/or complex incidents requiring a significant number of local, state or tribal resources. They manage incidents that extend into multiple operational periods and require a written Incident Action Plan (IAP). A Type 3 AHIMT may initially manage more complex incidents that later transition to a national level AHIMT.

Depending on the location of the incident the team could deploy by land or air travel.

The team is deployable for up to 14 days. Should the mission go beyond this period a second team/wave may be deployed to relieve that team.

The NJ-AHIMT is available to assist with planned events that exceed a jurisdiction or agency’s capability or capacity. The Team is also available to provide single resources and/or assistance and guidance on an as needed basis. You can email us at njahimt@njsp.gov
